Car rental ID copy: what you can't redact
What the counter actually needs alongside your driving licence — and how to hand it over safely.
Short answer

At the rental counter, alongside your licence, the agent asks for “an ID or your passport too.” It’s routine at most desks — and, like every other version of this request, worth handing over deliberately rather than automatically.
Why rental desks ask for more than your licence
Your driving licence proves you’re entitled to drive; it doesn’t always carry your legal name the way your passport or national ID does, which is what the rental agreement, the security deposit and the insurance are actually written against. Many desks photocopy both documents as standard practice — particularly for visitors renting on a foreign licence, where matching the two matters more.
Two things you cannot cover
Your driving licence number. It is what the insurance cover and any liability for a speeding fine or toll are written against, and a rental agreement without it does not work. This is not a field to guard — it is the point of the document.
In Spain, the identity fields, because vehicle rental is a registered activity. What you can still cover
Outside that duty — most of Europe, most of the time — the desk needs your name, your photo, your licence details and sometimes your nationality. It does not need:
- The passport or ID document number.
- The machine-readable zone.
- Your date of birth, unless it is being matched against your licence.
- Your signature.

Ask what happens to the copy
Some desks scan and keep a copy on file for the length of the rental; others just glance at the document and hand it straight back. Asking “do you need to keep a copy, or just check it?” costs nothing and often means there’s nothing left to protect afterwards.
